Once again, Dos Maderas Luxus Rum continues its collaboration in the conservation of endangered sea turtles, donating a portion of its sales profits to this cause. This initiative has earned the Bodegas recognition from the prestigious magazine Drinks International, which included it among the 12 best of the year 2019.

This conservation campaign began in 2014, when Williams & Humbert decided to collaborate with ICAPO (Eastern Pacific Hawksbill Initiative) by making a significant donation for the adoption of endangered Hawksbill turtles.

Since that date, our Bodegas have continued this work by partnering with the organizations Sos Nicaragua and See Turtles. To this end, the Dos Maderas Luxus brand collaborated in the Billion Baby Turtles campaign. This campaign succeeded in saving more than one million endangered turtles, thanks to the efforts of over 500 volunteers who participated in more than 4,000 conservation patrols and more than 10,000 students who received training on the subject. Together with the Billion Baby Turtles Program, this organization also launched the Too Rare to Wear campaign to raise awareness among tourists and end the trade of objects made from hawksbill illegally extracted from the shells of these species.
Since 2018, Dos Maderas Luxus Rum has worked closely with the Sos Nicaragua organization for the conservation of these turtles. To achieve this, it makes donations and also allocates part of the profits from the sale of this rum to this objective. Many tasks have been implemented for this purpose, such as the hiring of people at risk of social exclusion for the task of collecting turtle eggs, thereby preventing theft while raising awareness among the population about the importance of conserving this species.

The survival of the different turtle species in these waters is at risk due to the looting of eggs, which are sold illegally on the black market, or the fraudulent use of the shell for the manufacture of various objects. By participating in this campaign, important nesting beaches are protected, ensuring that hatchlings reach the water thanks to the hiring of local residents who patrol these beaches. These turtles play a fundamental role in maintaining marine-coastal ecosystems, such as coral reefs and seagrass meadows, making their survival essential for environmental conservation.

The collaboration with this initiative stems from Williams & Humbert’s desire to strengthen ties with the region of origin of its rums, which are subsequently aged at the Bodegas’ facilities in Jerez. In fact, the brand name Dos Maderas refers to the two types of wood involved in the aging of our rum: rums that age in the Caribbean, in casks previously used to age Bourbon, and subsequently in Jerez, in American oak casks that have previously aged 20-year-old Palo Cortado and Pedro Ximénez.

Dos Maderas Luxus Rum is the flagship of the Dos Maderas Rum range. A rum originating from the Caribbean (Guyana and Barbados) which, after aging there for 10 years, is transferred to the Williams & Humbert Bodegas where it is aged for a further 5 years in casks that have contained the 20-year-old VOS Pedro Ximénez wine “Don Guido”. This wine was chosen as the Best Wine of the Year at the “Sommelier Challenge 2019” in the United States and Double Gold at the “Sommelier Challenge International Wine and Spirit Competition 2020”.
